Friday Duet Aaron Neville and Chaka Khan

It’s hard to mistake the unique voice of Aaron Neville. When you have a chance to combine it with another original in Ms. Chaka Khan, you’re in for a real treat.

This collabo is great, not only because of the voices included, but the tune they chose to render. “Let’s Stay Together” is one of “those” classic R&B tunes most people know from the incomparable Al Green.

One of his signature tunes, among a career of signature cuts, this is a fan favorite and represents his musical style to a T. Many may remember Al on one of the performance shows or on Soul Train, with horns and band in tow, doing it up. Much soul brother Al, much soul.

The tune reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list when it was released back in 1971 and stayed there for 16 weeks. As evidenced by this recording by Chaka and Aaron, the popularity continues on.

Neville and Khan slow the cut down quite a bit in this rendition and smooth it out to showcase their unique voices.

Both have enjoyed successful careers and have included duets and “crossover” opportunities in their vast repertoires. Both have performed with Country, Jazz – many a traditionally tangential styling partnership that have all worked, in their own interesting way.

This particular tune is from Neville’s 2006 release, “Bring it All Home: The Soul Classics,” featuring songs like, “(Sittin on) the Dock of the Bay,” “Respect Yourself“ (Ft. Mavis Staples) and “People Get Ready” with David Sanborn and brother Art Neville.

Enjoy brother Al singing his version below from a 1993 performance at the Apollo Theater.

“Let’s Stay Together”

I, I’m so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
‘Cause you make me feel so brand new
And I want to spend my life with you

Things just ain’t the same, baby, since we’ve been together
Loving you forever
Is what I need
Let me be the one you come running to
I’ll never be untrue

Let’s, let’s stay together
Lovin’ you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad

Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad

Why, why some people break up
Then turn around and make up
I just can’t see
You’d never do that to me (would you, baby)
Staying around you is all I see
(Here’s what I want us to do)

[Repeat to fade:]
Let’s, we oughta stay together
Loving you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
